One of the great freedoms is freedom of expression. I frequent the online photographic posts of the Sartorialist, he travels around the world posting images of people who through fashion are quite inspirational and unique. I like to imagine some of his muses in their own homes, I sometimes wonder; how do they accessorize their living space, what are their dinner parties like, is their home a reflection of the person I see before me? The joy of being an interior designer is not imposing my exact idea of design upon a client but finding their voice and translating that to their home in a pleasing way. Ever wonder how to place your furniture when the size of your great room is…well, great? A backless sofa like the Jackson Studio Sofa or a large chaise can covert seamlessly to service the inner portion of the room, as well as the outer-skirts; this is a benefit especially when you host large gatherings for comfortable conversational groupings. Tie a color from one end of the room to another (like the coral in this great room) by coordinating or complementing drapery, matting on your artwork, or upholstery; this will visually unite the entire area. On that note, if you would like to “assign” a portion of the room to a different task, using different colors to designate an office space or reading nook can accomplish just that.
I have never been a fussy fuss-fuss when it comes to door hardware, as long as the metals coordinate with the theme of the home, and has a good shape so it blends in nicely. But who said door hardware should always be seen and not heard? The Nouveau Metal Door Lever in Butler Silver finish would be a standout, proclaiming “Style lives here”! I really have a feeling that an Art Nouveau revival is coming back, with a vengeance- a sweet and fantastical vengeance. Sherle Wagner has some fabulous designs and uncompromised, stand alone quality. The line of faucets by Waterworks (where water is their muse) truly reflects the natural elemental beauty of water. The Crystal Egg Handles of the Opus Lavatory Faucet in Nickel finish and shower Opus Wall Valve Trim are like drops of clear cool water. Inviting and organic, I wouldn’t mind this set in my ensuite. I have had a penchant for black onyx since Adam bought me a beautiful diamond and onyx watch for my birthday. Something about that smooth precious black is so striking and luxe. The Onyx Lounge in San Francisco’s St. Francis Hotel is aptly named, and was designed by Barbara Barry. Mirroring the exterior; the tall black marbled columns are topped with ivory Corinthian pilasters and flank the tall windows which draw your eyes up to the thick medallion studded ceiling. A pearl faced clock slung from the ceiling hangs like a heavy pendant on an elegant necklace. It is the contrast that is so smashing, and has been achieved in a truly lovely way. This lounge is completely befitting for the historical and alluring St. Francis Hotel.
I am in awe of the extraordinarily contemporary wine cellar signed by the Porsche Design Studio for Veuve Clicquot. It is described as a modern cabinet of curiosities, a showcase, a treasure chest that is entirely handmade and sheathed in brushed steel.
