How To: Effective Lighting

Every room in your house should have something in common; spectacular lighting!  In living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, and kitchens, you should have three types of lighting:General Lighting: This is the general light that highlights the size and use of the room at hand.  Pot-lights, ceiling fixtures or even chandeliers may serve in this purpose.  Always have your general lighting on a dimmer switch so you may control the ambience, then your dining room table can serve as a craft table or to set the stage for a truly romantic evening.Task Lighting: This type of lighting refers to reading lamps, stair marker lights, under-cabinet lighting, and basically anything that will help you see better for performing a particular task.

Tripod floor lamps are hot right now; they blend in seamlessly in a converted loft, in an artsy up-town office, or your home library/ den.  I love the nickel finish and the overly emphasized industrial feel of theRoyal Master Sealight Floor Lamp from Restoration Hardware

Black Clear Crystal Chandelier

New and terribly dramatic for its size, this crystal and black lighting fixture is just perfect for your foyer or entryway.  I love the details, the scrolls of black and beads of crystal makes this chandelier my top pick for a small to mid size entrance.

All that glitters is not gold, as seen in this hanging lamp with polished stainless steel discs hoop-mounted on multi-ring metal frames. This handsome light fixture would be well-suited for a contemporary dining room matched with deep blues or black.
