Who wouldn't love the ultimate privacy of an interior courtyard in their home? Usually completely enclosed, an interior courtyard offers seclusion from the outside world without the eyesores of a fence or need for well thought out large scale landscaping. A celeb who agrees is none other than Miss Britney Spears; she has purchased this beautiful home in California which happens to feature a private courtyard that offers an outdoor fireplace, and imported limestone fountain. You can see the scale of the courtyard from the aerial view. Balconies offer wonderful light for each facing room, and no need for blinds, well, depending on who is visiting that is! I just love the weathered patinas on the pavers and stone details.
This courtyard was inspired by the Alhambra Palace in Spain. The details on the deep-stained wood and glass doors offer a Moorish flare that is echoed in the arches and headers. The monochromatic palette offered in the stucco and cream and grey tones are timeless and create a true oasis appeal.
Hidden Courtyards don't have to look Tuscan to be hip, a contemporary courtyard like this one would be just as relaxing- with a few more seating and lounge areas of course. This L-shaped home by architect Roger Kurath may only have a partially enclosed courtyard, but it still gives the owners a bit of privacy and opens up some great views from the interior. Simple and bold glass partition doors that span the entire courtyard-facing walls fold up accordion style to blur the line of inside verses out. A continuous stretch of sleek railing provides a balcony feel. In the words of the architect, the courtyard provides: “A silent world where in the inhabitants can benefit of privacy and tranquility while living in an urban environment.” |

Off the coast of beautiful Mumbai, Antilla, the world's first billion dollar home is under works for petrochemicals leader Mukesh Ambani and his wife and three children. This 27 storey tower of finery houses a plethora of practical features such as: nine elevators, an incredible ballroom, a professional home theatre, an indoor/ outdoor health level complete with juice bar and yoga/ dance studios, 6 stories of garage space, an upper level for entertaining with floor to ceiling windows for fabulous views of the Arabian sea and Mumbai, and much much more.

The elegant ballroom caught my eye. I am always up for fun lighting and design, and I love the fact that almost 80% of the ceiling is just dripping with crystal chandeliers. You can just feel the ambiance already. Click on this link to view some of the other rooms Antilla has to offer. *Now a question to you; if money was absolutely not an object and you could build a lofty estate, what would it feature? Would it be one sprawling level with English gardens and an art gallery for your Renoir's? Would it have an ultra mod and sleek minimalist approach packed with technology for easy living? I would be interested to know. |

Adam and I love to tour around model homes and see new products and design ideas, two years ago we happened upon a 4-storey Bloomberg home in St. Jacobs. The top level had dramatically sloping ceilings and to utilize the horizontal space was this absolutely lovely feature. The Cabrio Balcony Roof Window by Velux allowed much more light to enter the room, and looked like a large skylight. When opened however, the top portion hinged up and the bottom portion folded out handsomely to allow a person or two to walk out to the new outdoor space. It felt very spacious and added a whole new dimension! I could see this Balcony Roof Window working well in a loft bedroom, or office, or cottage. It really allows for an amazing view.

While focusing on architect John C. Henry, I stumbled graciously upon Chateaux de Reves, a phenomenal French Renaissance Manor style mansion. I love the symmetry of the entry, the carved stone, generously sized arches, and the mirrored-shape arched windows. The two towering white columns with Corinthian pilasters that support the covered entry and the oversized key stone set a tone of formality and traditional design. Looking through John Henry's portfolio, evident characteristics of his designs are detail, period accuracy and DETAIL. He gets it right every time.
The interior of the chateaux is as stunning as the exterior. A glimpse down to the Elliptical Dining Room is possible as one ascends the dramatic L shaped Grand Stair to secondary bedrooms above. The Dining Room has delicate moldings set off slightly from the warm toned plaster finished curved walls. It is connected to the Kitchen via Butler Pantry. I love the handsome window treatments, very elegant. The two storey sky-lit foyer is a beautiful blend of cut stone details and plaster. The wrought iron doors under the staircase lead to the wine cellar which is also accessible to the dining room. Overall a gem of a home. |

The Panelite ClearShade insulating glass unit was developed for exterior glazing applications using a tubular honeycomb core with patented polymer technology that offers superior shading performance. In addition to the benefits of visual privacy and a Visible Light Transmittance of up to 50%, the Clear Shade IGU achieves a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient 75% lower that of other insulating glass units without the need for tinted, reflective or specialty glass. This dramatically reduces climate control requirements which results in significant energy savings over the life of the building.
Panelite is a wide-ranging product, versatile to many interior and furniture projects. Best of all it can be customized as well. Panelite can be backlit, support weight, be housed on moving walls, or can be formed into furniture, like the information desk made of Cast Polymer Panelite in the Georgia Aquarium.
